The Enterprise Office of the University of Moratuwa proudly announces the signing of a licensing agreement with LINA Manufacturing (Pvt) Ltd for the commercialization of a locally developed spacer device, a medical innovation designed to support individuals with respiratory conditions.

This product is the outcome of a collaborative research initiative led by Mr. Jayaka Mangala, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Moratuwa. The device was clinically validated, with expert medical guidance provided by Dr Anil Goonatillaka, ensuring its safety and efficacy for local use.

The licensing agreement was formally signed on 19th March 2025, with Dr Anil Goonatillaka, representing LINA Manufacturing. This partnership reflects a significant milestone in the University’s efforts to transfer indigenous technology directly to the market, especially in the healthcare sector.

Designed with affordability and accessibility in mind, the spacer device is expected to offer a cost-effective alternative to imported products, thus making respiratory support more accessible to the Sri Lankan public. The initiative also highlights the potential of homegrown innovations to address critical healthcare needs while promoting local industry and reducing dependency on foreign imports.

The signing event was attended by Dr. Pasqual, Director – Enterprise, Mr. Mangala, Senior Lecturer – Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Ms. Amali Hettige, Manager – Enterprise, underscoring the University’s ongoing commitment to translating academic research into impactful societal solutions.

This successful technology transfer sets a strong precedent for future university-industry collaborations aimed at delivering affordable, high-quality solutions to the public.
