The Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) of Sri Lanka’s state universities came together to host the event “Powering Socio-Economic Development Through University Innovations” on 17th June 2025 at TRACE City, Colombo with the fullest support of TRACE City Colombo. The event brought together more than 70 participants, including university representatives, technology transfer professionals, government officials, and industry partners, underscoring the national importance of advancing university-driven innovation.
The program opened with a welcome address by Dr. Sankalpa EOC, Board Chairman of TRACE, followed by an insightful session on the history and current status of University Business Linkage (UBL) Cells by Dr. Ajith Pasqual, Director of UBL, University of Moratuwa.
Prof. Gomika Udugamasooriya, Advisor to the President of Sri Lanka, shared government perspectives and policy directions on university technology transfer, emphasizing its role as a national priority. Mr. Chamendra Somathunga, Managing Director of FADNA, presented a compelling case study on FADNA’s collaborative experience with the University of Colombo and University of Ruhuna.
A special guest speaker from IIT Madras highlighted international best practices in technology transfer, providing valuable insights on building globally competitive university innovation ecosystems. The event concluded with a lively discussion forum led by TRACE Sri Lanka, focusing on future actions to strengthen collaboration between academia, industry, and government.
Participants were encouraged to view technology transfer as a strategic necessity, not an option, for Sri Lanka’s socio-economic development. The evening closed with fellowship and networking, fostering new partnerships and reinforcing a shared commitment to turning university research into real-world solutions.
