Enterprise Unit Introduces Innovation and Intellectual Property Opportunities to Architecture Students

The Enterprise Unit of the University of Moratuwa conducted a familiarization and awareness session for undergraduate students of the Faculty of Architecture on 7th March 2026 at the Rupert Peiris Auditorium. The programme was organized to introduce students to the University’s innovation and commercialization ecosystem while highlighting the opportunities available to transform creative ideas into impactful solutions.

The session attracted the participation of more than 100 Architecture students, who engaged in discussions on entrepreneurship, innovation, and intellectual property (IP). The programme aimed to encourage students to think beyond conventional career pathways by exploring how their knowledge and design capabilities can be developed into products, services, and ventures that create value for society.

The Director of the Enterprise Unit delivered a comprehensive presentation introducing the Enterprise Unit, its mission, and the range of services available to students and researchers. The presentation highlighted how the Unit supports innovation through industry collaborations, technology transfer, startup development, research commercialization, and entrepreneurial initiatives across the University.

The Manager of the Enterprise Unit conducted a second presentation focusing on the fundamentals of intellectual property (IP) and its importance in protecting creative works, innovations, and commercially valuable ideas. Students were introduced to different forms of IP protection and the role of the Enterprise Unit in guiding inventors and innovators through the processes of identifying, protecting, and commercializing intellectual assets.

The interactive discussion also explored the opportunities and challenges associated with entrepreneurship, emphasizing how innovation, creativity, and effective intellectual property management can contribute to sustainable business development and societal impact. Students were encouraged to take advantage of the support mechanisms available through the Enterprise Unit, including guidance on innovation development, industry engagement, intellectual property protection, and commercialization pathways.

The session formed part of the Enterprise Unit’s continuing efforts to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset among University of Moratuwa students and to strengthen awareness of innovation and intellectual property as essential components of academic and professional success.
