As part of its commitment to creating meaningful social impact through knowledge partnerships, the Enterprise Unit of the University of Moratuwa facilitated a landmark collaboration with Room to Read Sri Lanka for the first time. The partnership aims to contribute to the advancement of children’s education in Sri Lanka through the promotion of reading habits and the standardization of children’s books.
Room to Read Sri Lanka, registered at the National Secretariat for Non-Governmental Organizations under the Ministry of Defence, has been actively engaged in improving literacy and educational outcomes for children. This collaboration brings together the expertise of both institutions to support initiatives that encourage a reading culture among children while strengthening the quality and consistency of children’s educational publications.
The collaboration agreement was formally signed on 12th February at the Vice Chancellor’s Office of the University of Moratuwa. The partnership was initiated following the impressive work carried out by the Integrated Design Department of the Faculty of Architecture, whose contributions highlighted the potential for broader collaboration in the field of children’s education and literacy development.
Representing the University of Moratuwa, the Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellor participated in the signing ceremony, together with the Head and academic staff of the Department of Integrated Design, Faculty of Architecture. The Director and Manager of the Enterprise Unit, who facilitated the partnership, were also present at the event. Representing Room to Read Sri Lanka, the Country Director and officials of the organization attended the signing ceremony.
This collaboration marks an important milestone in strengthening university-community engagement and demonstrates how academic expertise can be leveraged to address national educational priorities. Through this partnership, both organizations aspire to create long-term benefits for Sri Lankan society by supporting literacy development, encouraging lifelong reading habits among children, and contributing to the improvement and standardization of children’s books.
